should i consider guitar lessons… or should i continue learning on my own?

i really want to learn to play guitar, and i have both ‘guitar for dummies’ and ‘1st steps for a beginning guitarist’ by bruce arnold. i played for a few weeks, and, well… it got boring. the books give me no motivation and the songs suck. but my desire to play is no less than the day that i first decided that i wanted to play. im only 13, so i want to learn to play cool stuff. fast.

I went years before taking a couple of lessons. You can play guitar recreationally without ever paying a dime. But, when you do sit down with a professional, he or she will make a list of the twenty bad habits you picked up by trying to do it on your own, and fixing all of that is like learning the guitar all over again.

I took about 3 lessens or so just to get a foundation set up, learning the cords, timing and hand placement and so on. After that, I taught myself. :)

    lessons suck

i learned on my own, and millions of others have learned on their own as well

    you can too

learn all your major and minor chords, and then you can begin playing some songs, which makes practicing a hell of a lot more fun

what i did to learn was just learn songs that you like. start off with simple songs that are mostly chords, and go from there. be patient, you’re not gonna be shredding within a few months or anything. just have fun with it, learn how to read tabs.

I have played guitar for 5 years and i recommend you to take guitar lessons because if you learn by your own you can have mistakes and no one correcting you, not to mention learning by your own is really boring

I definitely consider taking guitar lessons. i was in the same dilemma two years ago. It takes a little bit of time to get to play really fast, but lessons is definitely the way to go.

I understand your situation. You want to be able to play well in a short – preferably, VERY short – period of time.

    It doesn’t work that way.

Like many other things where high quality is desired, you’ll come to understand that it’s a gradually improving over time-type of thing. It’s a fine motor skill that takes time for your nerves to get used to placing your fingers in certain positions and learning particular strumming dynamics. Repetition is the only way, and yes, it takes time.

My advice is to postpone the world tour til you’re at least comfortable with your playing. Take the time to learn new techniques and tunings. Enjoy the learning process. Try using the lightest string gauge and start off learning about 5-6 chords. The, try a coupla more.

Take the time to daydream and mess around with trying somethings at random. I stumbled upon the opening riff to "Stairway to Heaven" that way.

One other thing: It’s usually more fun to play w/a friend than alone. You’re able to show each other new things you learn and can start a friendly competition w/each other.

ABOVE ALL: Have fun! That’s what it’s all about…! =]
